Post expedition

Roger decided to emigrate to South Africa in 1964, shipping Mugwump back by sea via Durban. He then established a number of polyurethane insulation business with branches in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Salisbury, using Mugwump as his only means of transport. Roger married a young nurse, Anne in 1966, and Mugwump was their wedding car. Anne’s three brothers were all tobacco farming in Rhodesia at the time, and after a number of visits, Roger became enamoured with the farming way of life, so decided to emigrate to Rhodesia in 1972, taking Mugwump along with him. After 3 years of learning the ropes in the Macheke region, Roger decided to buy his own farm, and needing the cash, sold Mugwump to Oswald Craxford in 1974, a member of the Vintage Club in Salisbury.

Roger later heard that Oswald had passed away in early 1977, and managed to negotiate the re-purchase of the old girl for the same amount he sold it for, and she was then housed in a three walled shed on the tobacco farm, in Mtepatepa. However, the bush war was hotting up, and there were regular terrorist attacks on remote farms, and Roger became worried about her safety, so drove her back to Cape Town, where she has remained since.

Mugwump was in the custodianship of Mike Stewart in Cape Town, until sale by auction to Rolf Schwerdtfeger, who had the room to look after her. She was a popular wedding vehicle and was involved in many vintage car meets. She ended up back in the ownership of Mike, then to his son Tom.
